Software Evaluation
Introduction I completed my software evaluation on The Oregon Trail 5th Edition which is published by The Learning Company.  This software allows students to utilize decision-making and problem solving skills to go on a simulated adventure on the Oregon Trail in the mid-19th Century as the United States is experiencing Western Expansion.  I chose this software because I wanted an interactive program that allowed students to participate and think critically.  I purchased the software from Best Buy.  It is available at most stores that have educational software.  It also can be ordered directly from The Learning Company.

A teacher could use this software when discussing American history during the mid-1800s.  The teacher could first demonstrate the software to the entire class using a projection device.  The students then could complete their own adventure independently.  For discussion, the teacher could get students to discuss the different decisions they made and why they made those decision.

I liked the fact that the software incorporated several different disciplines including English, History, Geography, Writing and Reading.  Overall, I thought the software achieved its objectives of putting students back in time and allowing them to learn what life would be like on the Oregon Trail.  The music and visuals were very appealing and made learning interesting.  The screen was free of clutter and the material was presented in a clear manner.

I would have liked to see more simulations done by real characters.  By including film excerpts, this would expand the software to older students.  A first time user may have problems knowing what how to get started.  The software does lack thorough instructions.  This may be remedied my including a "hint" box or a pull down help menu.

I would recommend this software to other teachers.  It brings history to life.  The program gave students many options and allowed them to shape their learning.  I would definitely recommend this software for upper elementary and middle school students.

The software is recommended for ages 9 and up.  It runs on both Windows and Macintosh and requires at least 32 RAM and a 16 bit monitor.
