Software Evaluation

The software package I evaluated was The Oregon Trail by The Learning Company. This software is multi-finctional in that it can be used for instruction in several subject areas such as history, social studies, geography, geology, botany, zoology, and cultural studies. It is designed to give users an idea of what life on the Oregon Trail was like while the student is given an opportunity to "travel" the trail. In doing so they face the various challenges incurred along the trail and therefore, must make critical decisions. Along the way there are many learning opportunities in the various subjects listed above. Teachers can use this for lessons in the above mentioned fields as well as others. They could evaluate performance by the students' success level at the completion of their "journey" and they could follow up with a paper about life on the trail or have the students complete a mock journal (provided with the package). Strengths: Again, this package is multi-functional. It presents students with challenges to overcome, provides facts, allows for critical decision-making, and is entertaining. The graphics are good and the content is accurate. Weaknesses: To complete the journey is a long process and some students, if not closely monitored, may get distracted along the way.
