Internet Resources

I found two sites that were most helpful in preparing my project.

The first one was www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/

This site is sponsored by NASA and is managed by the geological sciences department at San Diego State University. It is intended for college students as well as earth science teachers. This was great because it provided much information that was helpful to me. Because of this the level of the written information is well about the heads of my fifth grade students. This is a weakness because it makes the site unusable to my students at an independent level. However, the pictures and graphics are wonderful and could certainly be used at an instructional level in a group setting. The site also has many links listed that are intended for younger students to use.

The second site that I used was volcano.und.nodak.edu/vw.html.

This site is sponsored and maintained by the University of North Dakota. It is very user friendly and it is written on a level that my fifth grade students can use independently. A teacher could easily let students search on their own for information on this site. It has volcanoes listed by description, location and name. It contains several maps of volcano locations and interviews with volcanologists. I really like this site! I would be really hard pressed to list a weakness of this site. It has won numerous awards from such groups as US News, Education World, Look Smart, and Popular Science.
