Portfolio Theme
The theme for this portfolio is television and
its effects on society. The average child will watch 8,000 on TV before
finishing elementary school. By the time that same child is 18, they will have
seen 40,000 murders on TV and over 200,000 acts of violence. Television violence
is a casual factor in real life mayhem and is considered by some as a "public
health problem". Many people spend so much time watching television that it can
be considered as a substance abuse. Television not only contributes to the
altering reality, but it also can contribute to obesity, another reoccurring
American health problem. Television and the media from it can present a warped
version of how people should look and act having an impact on how people see
themselves. When used in moderation, television can be an effective educational
tool and a nice break from the pressures of everyday life. The problem occurs
when people spend too much time in front of the television set and less time
interacting with family and other members of society. Society has to learn how
to use television in a beneficial way, and not let television schedules run our
lives. We have to learn how to run our own lives, and not let television tell us
how to think, look, and feel. If this can be accomplished, then society will be
better as a whole.
