Site: Occupational Outlook Handbook 2002-02 Edition
Rating: of 5 possible stars

The Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is available online and in print. It provides detailed information about a variety of occupations and is an excellent resource for students to explore as they are developing career goals. You can access specifics about a profession by 1) doing a keyword search, 2) browsing categories of occupations (i.e. sales or construction), or 3) by sorting through a compiled alphabetical listing.

Each profession has the following headings:

  • Significant Points
  • Nature of Work
  • Working Conditions
  • Employment
  • Training
  • Job Outlook
  • Earnings
  • Related Occupations

Unlike may websites, this one takes steps to comply to accessibility standards. For example, they provide "alt tags" for visually impaired visitors. There may or may not be more accessibility features because the last update to the accessibility was October 2001.

In addition to overviews, the site publishes online publications with info for career counselors, educators, and students. Most of the documents are PDF files divided into different categories.

Although there is a comprehensive list of careers available, some of the more common jobs can only be found under generic headings and give little information (ex. "graphic designers" have a small paragraph under "Designers" with not much information).
