David Goff's Portfolio Theme

Teaching English

By David Goff

My portfolio theme is broad but relevant to me as a high school English teacher. The two main subcategories of the subject of English are literature and grammar. My theme deals with both literature and grammar, though in the context of incorporating technology in the classroom. In a world where technology is becoming more and more a part of peopleās everyday lives and inevitably a part of the classroom, I wanted to prove to myself that I could successfully use technology to assist my instruction. The portfolio illustrates an application of using technology in the English classroom.

Included in the portfolio is a none-linear Powerpoint presentation of American literature. The portfolio shows how Powerpoint is a perfect and efficient way to help student categorize, in this case, American literature by era and author, giving a brief description of the dominant authors of the specified era.

Also included in the portfolio is an evaluation of an instructional software called Grammar for the Real World. The software attempts to teach students grammar through hands-on experience, giving authentic scenarios/simulations so that students can see the importance of grammar.

Lastly, the portfolio provides two web sites, with a brief description of both, that would be beneficial to English teachers. Those web sites are listed on the resource page.
