Personal Identity

The objective for a thematic unit on personal identity is to unite relationships between literature and writing with an awareness of personal identity and students' global impact. Short stories that document and represent the human experience introduce characters' personal identities. These are the short stories that I have chosen: The Yellow Wall-Paper, The Pedestrian, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, and A Tell-Tale Heart. The students will read and analyze Letter from Birmingham Jail in relation to human purpose, along with the universality and symbols in relation to human purpose in our world today. The students will analyze the use of symbols in literature to represent human experience and the universality related to these symbols. Students will analyze how an author's writing style impacts literature in its delivery and determine the impact of our writing on others. The students will read and analyze personal identity and human experience in poetry by Edgar Alan Poe and Gwendolyn Brooks.
