BIOGRAPHY

David Virtue is an assistant professor of middle level education and social studies in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education at USC, and he is affiliated with the Office of International and Comparative Education in the College of Education. Dr. Virtue earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in social science education from the University of Georgia, where he worked under the direction of Diane Brook Napier, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology from Lafayette College in Easton, PA. His dissertation research focused on the implementation of integration policy targeting immigrant and refugee schoolchildren in Denmark, and he has maintained an interest in both comparative/international education and educational policy responses to linguistic diversity. One line of his current research is concerned with the preparation of middle level social studies teachers for work in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. He also does research on aspects of middle level reform implementation, including middle level teacher education and certification policy, curriculum development at the middle level, and middle school organization. Before coming to USC, “Mr. V” taught seventh grade world geography and coached basketball and tennis at The Lovett School in Atlanta, and he also worked at Trinity School in Atlanta and Wallkill Valley Regional High School in Hamburg, NJ. A native and longtime resident of Franklin, NJ, Dr. Virtue currently resides in Columbia, SC with his family - his wife Shannon, their son James Ryan, and their two four-legged children, Maggie and Pup. When he has time, Dr. Virtue enjoys fly fishing, travel, and Gamecock athletics.
