BIOGRAPHY
David Virtue is an assistant
professor of middle level education and social studies in the Department of
Instruction and Teacher Education at USC, and he is affiliated with the Office
of International and Comparative Education in the College of Education. Dr.
Virtue earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in social science education from
the University of Georgia, where he worked under the direction of Diane Brook
Napier, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology from
Lafayette College in Easton, PA. His dissertation
research focused on the implementation of integration policy targeting
immigrant and refugee schoolchildren in Denmark, and he has maintained an
interest in both comparative/international education and educational policy
responses to linguistic diversity. One line of his current research is concerned
with the preparation of middle level social studies teachers for work in
culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. He also does research on
aspects of middle level reform implementation, including middle level teacher
education and certification policy, curriculum development at the middle level,
and middle school organization. Before coming to USC, “Mr. V” taught seventh
grade world geography and coached basketball and tennis at The Lovett School in
Atlanta, and he also worked at Trinity School in Atlanta and Wallkill Valley
Regional High School in Hamburg, NJ. A native and longtime resident of Franklin,
NJ, Dr. Virtue currently resides in Columbia, SC with his family
- his wife Shannon, their son James Ryan, and their two four-legged children,
Maggie and Pup. When he has time, Dr. Virtue enjoys fly fishing, travel,
and Gamecock
athletics.
