Biography
A
former public school art teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio,
Schramm-Pate joined the USC faculty in 1998 after completing
a Ph.D. in Educational Administration (Curriculum Studies)
at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio). Within the
Department of Instruction & Teacher Education (ITE) she
teaches in the program area of Curriculum & Instruction.
She also serves as an affiliate faculty member for the
Women’s Studies Program (WOST). Schramm-Pate’s teaching
concentration and research interests in the area of
curriculum studies revolve around women’s studies,
historiography, cultural studies, and integrated
curriculum. Courses she teaches on a regular basis include: EDCS 722-Race and Ethnic Diversity in Curriculum; EDCS
723-Understanding Sexual Diversity; EDCS 724-Gender
Diversity in Schools and Communities; EDCS 725-Principles of
Curriculum Construction; EDCS 822-Curriculum Classics:
Trends and Issues; EDCS 821-Curriculum Theory; and WOST
701-Feminist Theory. Her books include, Grappling with
Diversity: Readings on Civil Rights Pedagogy and Critical
Multiculturalism (in press, SUNY) co-edited with Rhonda
Jeffries; Transforming the Curriculum: Thinking Outside
the Box (2002, Scarecrow Press), and A
Separate Sisterhood: Women Who Shaped Southern Educational
Reform in the Progressive Era (2002, Peter Lang)
co-authored with Katherine Reynolds Chaddock. Her research
appears in Art Education Journal; International Journal
of Educational Research Journal, High School Journal,
Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, Journal of
Communications and Minority Issues, Journal of
Secondary Education, and Southern Studies: An
Interdisciplinary Journal of the South.

Research Interests
Schramm-Pate's research interest in the areas of gender studies, educational history, and curriculum are reflected in her books which include: 1) "A Separate Sisterhood: Women Who Shaped Southern Educational Reform in the Progressive Era" (New York: Peter Lang, 2002) co-authored with Katherine Reynolds Chaddock; and 2) "Transforming the Curriculum: Thinking Outside the Box" (Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press, 2002). Two recent chapters co-authored with Dennis Carlson, reflect Schramm-Pate's research interests in the areas of curriculum and cultural studies: 1) "The Symbolic Curriculum: Reading the Confederate Flag as a Southern Heritage Text" which appears in the AERA Division B Curriculum Award-winning volume edited by Greg Dimitriadis and Dennis Carlson, "Promises to Keep: Cultural Studies, Democratic Education, and Public Life" (New York: Routledge Falmer, 2003)and 2) "Risky Business: Teaching About the Confederate Flag Controversy in a South Carolina High School" which appears in "Beyond Silenced Voices: Class, Race, and Gender in United States Schools" edited by Lois Weis and Michelle Fine (New York: SUNY Press). Schramm-Pate's research is also represented in articles which appear in Journal of Curriculum Theorizing; High School Journal; International Journal of Educational Research; Journal of Communications and Minority Issues; Art Education Journal; and Journal of Secondary Education.
