M.A.T. Programs

The M.A.T. degree is designed for those individuals who currently hold a bachelors degree in a qualifying discipline from an accredited institution of higher education, have little or no preparation in professional education course work, and would like to become a certified secondary school (grades 9-12) teacher.  Adding certification for teaching at the middle level (grades 5-8) can be accomplished by completing additional course work (click here for information on adding middle level language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies certification).  A detailed Advisement Guide for all M.A.T. degrees is available at http://www.ed.sc.edu/SA/docs/MATgen.pdf and includes information about course work, admission to the professional program, and internships.  Admission information can be found at http://www.ed.sc.edu/SA/programs2/secondary.html#8.

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree (M.A.T.) is offered in several secondary school subject matter areas.

Application for Admission to the M.A.T. Degree Program

  1. Complete the on-line Graduate School application.  Indicate on the application the particular M.A.T. program in which you wish to enroll.
  2. Submit 2 letters of recommendation to the Graduate School (USC Graduate School, 901 Sumter St. #304, Columbia, SC 29208).
  3. Submit scores on either the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test to the Graduate School.
  4. Submit official transcripts reflecting undergraduate degree and any graduate work to the Graduate School.
  5. Check with a representative from area to which you are applying for any additional requirements.

 


Program of Study Templates

Use the templates below, in consultation with your M.A.T. advisor, to complete the Graduate School Interdisciplinary Programs for Teachers form (available at http://www.gradschool.sc.edu/doclibrary/documents/matimaprogramofstudy.pdf  ).  Submit your Program of Study with your signature and that of your advisor and M.A.T. committee members  to the College of Education Office of Student Affairs during the second semester of your degree program.  Signature of the Dean of the Graduate School will be obtained by the Office of Student Affairs and you will be informed when your program is accepted.

Admission to the Professional Program and Internship

Formal admission to the Professional Program and admission to the internship is required of all M.A.T. students.  Admission criteria are described in the M.A.T.
