pHinding the pH

Lesson Overview

The lesson will introduce the concept of pH and the pH scale. Students will first be shown an introductory demonstration, then given some notes that will explain the mathematics and theory behind the pH scale. The students will then be shown a transparency of the pH scale. After this, the students will observe a household products demonstration. Finally, the students will conduct a laboratory experiment.

Lesson Objectives

The student will be able to:
  • Compare and Contrast the composition of strong and weak solutions of acids or bases.
  • Relate pH to the strengths of acids and bases.
  • Interpret the pH scale.
  • Enter, store, retrieve, and graph data using a CBL.

Pre-Lesson Activities

After students have taken their seats, the teacher will perform a Quick Demo.

Introductory/Engagement/Exploratory Activities and Materials

  • Teacher will present a short lecture and some notes on pH and the pH scale, explaining the mathematics behind the scale.
  • Laserdisk still frame 48184 of the pH scale will be shown.
  • Teacher will make a list of a few household products on the board (good examples are: vinegar, detergent, baking soda, antacid, a soda, mouthwash, windex, and water). The teacher will then have the students copy the list and decide amongst themselves if each product is an acid, a base , or neutral.

Modeling/Explanation/Elaboration/Practice Activities and Materials

  • Teacher will then demonstrate to students how to use the CBL with pH probes while testing the household products. The pH's obtained will be recorded by the students. Their answers should be compared to the correct answers.
  • Laserdisc frame 48186 will be shown. This illustrates the pH of some common substances.
  • Students will then be broken into groups and will perform the laboratory pHinding the pH.

Monitoring/Extension/Evaluation Activities and Materials

  • Data obtained by the students will be compiled and the graph will be projected. Students should include a copy of this graph in their lab reports. Any questions regarding manipulation of data and technique will be answered.
  • Students will complete Chapter 14 Review Questions #2,20,22,25,26,33,34 for homework. These will be taken up at the beginning of the next class and graded for completion. Questions on the homework will be addressed at this time.

Lesson Assessment Stratagies and Materials

  • Homework will be graded and returned promptly.
  • Assessed on Chapter 14 Test that will be given in the future.
